She picked The Blue Light from the Brothers Grimm. It's an odd one. The hero is a jerk. He gets a raw deal, it's true, but he takes such advantage of the light's power that it's hard to be sympathetic. The king is callous and cowardly. The witch is fairly neutral. She helps him in exchange for work and doesn't turn nasty until he won't give her the light. And the poor pawncess er, princess, is just furniture. That you can marry.

My manikin looks more like a little troll that anything, but he wasn't described in much detail. He's the only one with any sense of propriety, but still obeys the hero.

The story said that the hero was a soldier hurt too badly to keep on fighting, so I roughed him up pretty badly. It would also explain why he wasn't able to work as fast as the witch wanted.
